Air Pollution Led to 15% of Covid-19 Deaths Globally: A Study

According to a study, published in the journal Cardiovascular Research, researchers said, long term exposure to air pollution which may lead to 15% Covid-19 death globally. It has been found that the proportion of Covid deaths linked to air pollution was about 19%, 17% in North America and 27% in East Asia.

Researchers used epidemiological data from previous US and Chinese studies of air pollution and Covid-19 and Sars outbreak in 2003. They also used satellite data and combined them. The satellite data showing global exposure to polluting fine particles known as ‘particulate matter’ that are less than or equal to 2.5 microns in diameter which is also known as PM2.5. They also used information on atmospheric conditions and ground-based pollution monitoring networks.

Researchers found, the particulate matter increase the activity of a receptor on lung cell surfaces, ACE-2( Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2) which is known to be involved in the way Covid-19 infects patients. Air pollution can damage the lungs and increase the activity of ACE-2 which makes virus more effective for human body.
