What is Ammonium Nitrate? Lebanon Crisis!

In the evening of 4th august, a massive explosion happened in Beirut port, Lebanon. This explosion has killed 137 people and injured around 5000 people and more that 3 lakhs people have been displaced from their homes.
The explosion caused by over 2700 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate kept in storage for over 6 years.

Ammonium Nitrate is a common chemical ingredient of agriculture fertilizers and it is also nitrogen rich compound which is the main component of various explosives like RDX.
Pure Ammonium Nitrate is not an explosive on its own but if you mix it with other ingredients like fuels, it can be very explosive.
This types of explosives are being used by the terrorists around the world. The majority of the terror attacks in India including Pulwama, Mumbai attack, Ammonium Nitrate has been used like RDX.
In case of Lebanon explosion, There was a fire that started in the Ammonium Nitrate store because of heat generated due to the oxidation process.
This types of devastated explosion also happened in the past such as In China in 2015, In Texas in 1947.
