Scientists have developed a new technology that uses a smartphone to provide accurate results in less than 30 minutes. It is a technology of CRISPR based.
According to the research published in journal Cell, the new diagnostic test cannot only generate a positive but measures the viral load also in a given sample.
'All CSRISPR diagnostic tests require the viral RNA to be converted into DNA and amplified before it can be detected ', the researchers said.
In contrast,' the new approach skips all the conversion and amplification steps by using CSRISPR to detect the viral RNA directly ', they added.
Jennifer Doudna, a senior investigator at Gladstone Institutes in the U.S, said, ' One reason we are excited about the diagnostics is for the potential of quick and accurate result and specially helpful in places with limited access to testing or when rapid testing is needed. It could eliminate a lot of bottlenecks. '
Researchers said, ' In the new test, Cas13 protein is combined with a reporting molecule that becomes fluorescent and mixed with a patient sample from a nasal swab. '
' The sample is placed in a device attached to a smartphone. If the sample contains SARS-CoV2, Cas13 will be activated and will cut the reporting molecule,causing the emission of fluorescent signal. '
The smartphone's camera can be converted into a microscope that can detect the fluorescent and report the test as positive, according to the researchers.
The assay can be done in any smartphone by making the technology easily accessible.
For samples with low viral load, the researchers said, the device requires up to 30 minutes to distinguish it from negative test.
