The new toilet is called the Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) and it is more user-friendly and 40% smaller and 65% lighter than the previous one.
The old model was not women friendly and only had room for the user to urinate or defecate but not both together. But the new model made it comfortable for astronauts for doing both. The new design will also require lesser maintenance and plumbing.
Although, urinate and defecation have become easier but the disposal of the wastes still remains a problem. Most of it is put into airtight bags, and then stored in a cargo ship which is sent back to Earth and Urine is filtered and makes it reusable on ISS.
Previously, astronauts used plastic bags for peeing and this was really difficult for women astronauts. So the new model is much sufficient and helpful for the astronauts.
