A New Spacecraft Will Be Named After India Born Astronaut Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla made history as the first woman of Indian descent to go to space in Aboard Shuttle Columbia’s STS-87 mission in 1997. She was born in Karnal, India and in 1991 she became U.S citizen. She complted her Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College. a Master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas, and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado.

In 1994, She was selected to the NASA as astronaut corps. But unfortunately, While returning from her mission of outer space, her space shuttle Columbia disintegrated into the Earth’s atmosphere. At launch a briefcase sized insulation had broken off and damaged the thermal protection system of the shuttle’s wing, the shield that protects it from heat. As the shuttle passed through the atmosphere, hot gas streaming into the wing caused it to break up. The space ship depressurized, killing the crew in less than a minute and she died in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in East Texas.

Northrop Grumman, is an American global aerospace and defense technology company, announced its un-crewed NG-14 Cygnus spacecraft will be named for Kalpana Chawla as S.S. Kalpana Chawla

According to the Northrop Grumman, The spacecraft  will deliver more than 8,000 pounds of supplies and technology to the International Space Station and after that it will perform a destructive reentry into Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean.
