In a new paper published in "Radiology", scientists have found that long-term space flight could actually make the human brain grow physically bigger, including white matter, grey matter and cerebrospinal fluid around the brain.
As per the study, Astronauts who are on long-duration space flight missions may develop changes in the brain structure and function, which remain same for years after return to normal gravity. The exact causes ramain unknown.
Researchers performed MRI brain scan on all astronauts before they spent time on International Space Station. On the return, the astronauts were scanned again and the images of both scans were compared.
They found that areas of the brain of the astronauts had physically expanded in space.
Lead author of the study Mr Lary. A. Kramer said that when one is in microgravity, fluids such as blood no longer moves toward the lower extremities but rather redistributes headwords.
That may be the reason for this change-he added.
